Almost all of the popular brand names make hundreds of steam locomotives of different size and shape. Lionel, Bachman, Hornby and other prominent brand names produce near real models which keep the fans busy and fascinated for hours due to its gripping features.

These features have been developed with a lot of imagination and creativity to make it close to reality. One such example is generation of smoke from the locomotive. Inside the body of the locomotive, a burner is placed. When you pour a little quantity of oil, which is especially made for producing the smoke, into the chimney; it generates a trail of smoke whenever the steam train is on the move. An amber colored bulb is also placed in the smokestack which creates an effect of real fire in the steam trains. Be it whistling or chuffing; sound is also a whole new dimension to recreate. Sound units are placed inside the steam trains which are remotely controlled by the user with the control device.  This is such a wonderful and amazing scene which cannot be described in words. It is certainly not that easy to pay attention to that many minute details which are required by the miniature steam trains.

Hornby took a leap forward to make it easy for the enthusiastic fans of steam trains to be able to possess and maintain them conveniently. In year 2003 they launched a 00 gauge model engine which was electrically operated and was capable of producing smoke and sound effects in a robust manner. These Hornby steam trains use water inside the burner which is heated to produce the smoke. Thus the steam made is used to drive the locomotive. You may say that nothing is fabricated. Live steam locomotives were first introduced in 1905 and they were named as little giant. Lionel has a history to tell. The founding father of this model train Joshua Lionel Cowen born in 1877 was fascinated with the rapid progress of railways. He set up his company of toys in 1901. In fact he had created the model train in order to place it in the window of the shop to attract customers but instead of the target products people were interested to buy the train itself which made him start the serial production of the Lionel Train. All about Hornby Trains

Hornby railways are undoubtedly the major brand of the Hornby train models in Great Britain. Initially Hornby train manufacturing company was situated in Liverpool. They are specialized in this field since 1901. It started out when the creator of this company Frank Hornby obtained a copyright for his Meccano construction toy.   Breakthrough was achieved in 1920 when the first of its kind clockwork train was launched in the market.  Hornby, Hornby trains, model trains, model train railroads

In subsequent years of 1920’s an electric Hornby train was launched but it didn’t get too much attention and few were sold in France. In the latter half of the decade they got some success in the electric train which functioned at a very high voltage. Because of some safety concerns low voltage Hornby trains were launched in the 1930’s. In 1938 the classic 00 gauge train was launched with the name “Hornby Dublo”.  This model was very well planned and it was hugely accepted in the U.K. This particular range was a tremendous success. It was an electric and clockwork Hornby train model; its carriages were built with tinplate and their locomotives were made of die cast. Because of the Second World War this range witnessed a set back and in 1942 production was halted but it resumed after the end of the war but the clockwork models 00 gauges were never made after the war.

In the 1950’s, company could not cope with the competition; one of the major reason of its failure was that it is completely ignored by the probable benefits of the plastic. It came to realize the importance of the plastic too late and launched plastic rolling stock and that model was too complicated to operate in comparison to its rivals. They kept producing the old style models which contributed in their down fall. Although at a later stage, the collectors’ enthusiasm for vintage trains and Hornby’s adaptability for state of the art designs and themes played a pivotal role in its revival. Continue reading →
